Counseling

So many times we find we have become a shadow of who we once were. Our past painful experiences intrude on our present and obscure our vision of ourselves and the path ahead.

Who are you?

When painful experiences dominate our path, it is incredibly difficult to know where to go, who to be, and how to create meaning in life. Sometimes we find depression, anxiety, work problems, relationship challenges, and a whole host of other issues now color our lives.

How do you move forward?

Psychotherapy can help bring awareness and focus to objectives and co-create strategies to achieve your goals. We use a variety of techniques including Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Somatic Experiencing (SE), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), self-regulation techniques, and other solution-focused interventions to relieve symptoms of overwhelm, calm emotional discord, and enhance coping strategies to bring wellness and emotional connectivity back into your life. As grief and trauma specialists, we help you seek to understand the past painful experiences of your life and work toward integrating them into the filing system in your brain in a more healthful and adaptive way.

A word on trauma...

The human mind is complex and tricky. It is not the event that determines whether something is traumatic to someone, but the individual’s experience of the event and how it is filed in the brain. It is certainly not predictable how a given person will react to a particular event. For someone who is used to being in control of emotions and events, it may be surprising – or even embarrassing – to discover how debilitating trauma can be. While we think of big "shiny-blinky" trauma as being related to combat, natural disasters, death of a loved one, sexual harm, or other abuse,  trauma can also result from such common events as an auto accident, an ill-timed laugh, a breakup, divorce, a humiliating or disappointing experience, a surgery, a movie or story, or the discovery of an illness.

Traumatizing events can take a serious emotional toll, even if the event did not cause physical damage

Symptoms of trauma…

There are common effects or conditions that may occur following a traumatic event. Sometimes these responses can be delayed, for months or even years after an event:

Eating or sleeping disturbances
Sexual dysfunction
Low energy
Chronic, unexplained pain
Depression, despair, hopelessness
Anxiety or panic attacks
Fearfulness
Compulsive/Obsessive behaviors
Feeling out of control
Irritability, resentment
Emotional numbness or withdrawal
Memory lapses and feeling distracted
Difficulty making decisions
Flashbacks, nightmares
Detachment
Altered sense of time
Jumpiness and overreaction
Unprovoked anger
Obsessions with death

Processing your past does not have to be re-traumatizing - in fact, our goal is to create a therapeutic experience where you can safely integrate past painful experiences without emotional flooding, overwhelm, and re-experiencing.

Time does not heal all wounds...the adaptive and healthy integration of memories into the filing system of our brain is what gives us the best chance at moving into our future with meaning and integrity.

We endeavor to nurture a sense of self and a secure way of making sense of your life; to develop healthy, meaningful relationships with others; to help manage feelings and body sensations in a healthy, emotionally regulated way; and to integrate past painful experiences for renewed purpose and a functional life.
